A little box rests on a rocky ground. It looks like a cliff. Is that the sea in the background? Or is it just more rock? Is it a cliff? Is it a little box? And what about these armchairs and a sofa next to a coffee table in a desert landscape? Are they miniatures, are they life-size, is it a desert or is there a watercourse in the distance? What is far and what is near in this photograph? And even in those cases when we think we know – doesn’t the question remain? What is far? The past where these objects come from? Or the future, which seized them for this photo in a tentative translation? And what is near? This present, perhaps, in which, standing in the room, we have a silent conversation with each of the pieces?
The photographed objects in “Juego de living” (living room set or the game of living, or living as in a game) were chosen by women from different places of the world and offered to be part of something else: many subjectivities tied together by a single subjectivity and a camera.
Even when we don’t exactly understand what object is it that we are looking at, we do understand how much they involve, they compress. It’s a bit as if, in the photo, the object were beating, and boiling. After watching it for a while, a whole electrical activity seems to build up around it.
Is it a little box? A measuring tape? A cellphone with a chipped screen? Our fingers can perceive the touch, our palms can feel the weight. The photo makes it clear: that the object has been touched, smelled, and moved. It’s an identity. It was given a wipe down, changed from one shelf to another, it was put in a drawer, and taken out again. It went from one home to another. It has a pungent but also discreet scent reminiscent of another time, another place or someone loved. Just like our treasures, it claim its place in space.
– Laura Wittner

– Laura Wittner

Hombres, Lucia Puenzo 2018

She had just arrived to Buenos Aires and while we studied filmmaking she portrayed girls who were lost in the city, in the nature or in antique settings. Her pictures were fairy tales: uncanny, delicate and sweet. Both innocent and sexual. Pure contradiction… like Laura who still has that charming mix of trashy innocence.

As she travelled across Asia for longer and longer periods, still magnetized by the female world, she portrayed (magical) teenagers in Beijing and published a book. But she was already digging other worlds: it was in a series of portraits of Chinese artists in their workshops that men first made it into Laura’s work.

This year, when the eyes of the world seem to be looking at women, Laura aimed at men. After making incursions into dating apps she focused on masculine identity building. Given the collection of men practising extreme sports, posing by the Eiffel tower, showing guns, cars or muscles, she decided to portray them in a way that would shake masculine stereotypes up.

And there they are… look at them!

Polished nails and made-up eyes, laces, heels, handbags, pink sunglasses, emerald necklaces … pure nonchalance, sex and humour fuelled by Laura Cacherosky’s costumes, another irreverent comrade from our training years that already rocked our first short films back in the day.

The result blows up the hegemonic narrative around what a man is. But do not be confused: these are not cross-dressers. It is rather the feminine soul of all those men who are allowed to go out and play now that we are encouraged to think of a world that is not binary.

About The blue Hour (Songzhuang) Lara Mármor 2016

There are fifty parallel lanes and the cars move at a snail’s pace in a highway that leads to downtown Beijing. The trip feels long because of the traffic but even longer because of the dedicated exchange of ideas of the fellow travellers who do not share a common language.

Still a few kilometres away from the city a phone beeps with an incoming message. Suddenly the glances and gestures that guided the conversation stop. Words and faces are left behind on the road.

Some days after that trip the phone rings again with news. A few minutes later Laura grabs the bike, takes a dirt road and goes to a huge, bustling crowded market.

Micro mountains of dense jellied dough, strings of some kind of vegetal fibre, round and oval pearls, crumbles that could also be grains of salt, a paper cut-out and a rock that looks like caramelized cereal. Over a gelid white background small pieces of things that are hard to define reveal themselves in strange ways. Laura captures insignificant things and says: I am looking for ingredients that help me shape that cosmogonic moment when everything is about to start but it is still ending.

They are tiny portions of matter frozen in time. They are landscapes that work as vanitas but unlike the gloomy baroque taverns, the elements in Laura’s photographs seem to come to life and live together in torpid combination with greens, pinks and whites.
